What is Prayer?
2 Chronicles 7:14 is a great scripture. It says, “If my people will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, then God will hear us”. I love how it brings out simple elements. I like things simple, I don’t like things complicated. I like things where you and I can put the principles into practice, so we can benefit from it. It’s easy and it’s applicable.
I especially like where it says, “If my people pray and seek”. You see, scripture defines scripture, so when you put those 2 words together, it actually defines the meaning in that verse. It describes what prayer really is. That’s one of the major questions that we have today – What is prayer? How does prayer work? What is it supposed to do?
And right there in that passage God gives us the answer. We see that prayer is actually seeking God. We are told to both pray and seek. So when we talk about praying we’re talking about connecting. We’re talking about seeking – we’re talking about going after God.
This is so important because in prayer I’m seeking Him. Him being the one that created us. So if He’s the one that created us, I want to be connected to Him. The Bible refers to our connection as being like a vine – He is the vine and we are the branches. And we want that life giving, flowing spirit that’s in Him to flow down in to us – kind of like the way sap flows through a tree or a plant. That flow, that connection – it comes to us through going after God, which is seeking after God, or what we now know is Prayer.
In the book of Jeremiah, God tells us that “If we seek Him we’ll find Him.” So when we pray we are seeking. And when we are seeking we should be expecting. Expectation is SO important in a world that’s full of hopelessness. The Bible says that we’ll never be ashamed for going after Him. We’ll never be disappointed for going after Him. So I just want to encourage all of you – don’t stop, don’t give up – don’t stop going after God – prayer, seeking. Because if we keep it up, the Bible says you’ll find Him.
So we have to expect. Expect an answer, expect a breakthrough, expect a difference. Expect something to happen when we seek the Lord. He’s looking for someone who is just – real. He’s not looking for a religious piety or perfection – what He’s looking for is hungry hearts. So don’t be as concerned about being holy as you are about being hungry. The scripture tells us “blessed are those that hunger and thirst, and go after God. For they will be filled.” How do I fill an empty life? A hollow life? By going after God, through prayer, and seeking after Him.
